A town nestled in nature, representing the pride of Slovakia.
The town of High Tatras is one of the largest towns in Slovakia in terms of its area. It covers a significant part of the High Tatras mountain range, which is one of the most important tourist destinations in Slovakia. Visitors come to the High Tatras primarily for its unique and captivating nature and the abundance of sports and recreational activities available there.
From various Tatra settlements (such as Starý Smokovec, Štrbské Pleso, Tatranská Lomnica), it is possible to embark on high-altitude hikes along marked trails to different valleys or mountain peaks in the Tatras during the summer season. In winter, it attracts tourists with numerous winter sports opportunities in the breathtakingly beautiful surroundings.
Sports and hiking are key activities in the High Tatras. Foreign and domestic tourists have immense opportunities for hiking, leading them to high-altitude mountain huts. Popular huts include Zamkovského Chata, Chata pod Soliskom, Chata pod Rysmi, Zbojnícka, Téryho Chata, and Chata pri Zelenom Plese. For skiing enthusiasts, ski resorts such as Bachledka, Tatranská Lomnica, Štrbské Pleso, and Ždiar-Strednica are open in winter.
What we recommend to see and experience
Tatra National Park Museum
The Museum of the Tatra National Park is located in Tatranská Lomnica and contains numerous artifacts from the fields of botany, zoology, history, cartography, geology, and ethnography. The permanent exhibition of the museum is divided into four thematic sections: natural sciences (geological structure, flora, and fauna of the Western, High, and Belianske Tatras), nature conservation (history of nature conservation in the High Tatras, activities of the Mountain Service, and current research in the national park), historical section (settlement of the Tatra region and the impact of human activities on nature), and ethnographic section (depicting the material and spiritual culture of people from the sub-Tatra and Tatra villages).
Ice Dome
The Tatra Ice Dome appears annually in the tourist resort of Hrebienok in the High Tatras and is the most visited winter attraction in the Tatras, with a different design each year. The art of ice sculpting is unveiled to visitors in the form of beautiful ice sculptures created by numerous sculptors and carvers from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Germany. The Ice Dome not only captivates visitors with its visually stunning form but also hosts musical concerts that visitors can enjoy within the stunning ice sanctuary.
Kvantarium
Kvantarium is an interactive light gallery located in Hrebienok in the High Tatras, where visitors can see and experience various audiovisual multimedia shows, try out interactive exhibits, and explore physical phenomena. The entertaining presentation of science and physics, laser shows, video mapping, and light drawing are elements that enhance the tourist experience.
Calvary on Pekná Vyhliadka
Calvary on Pekná Vyhliadka is situated on a wooded hill on the eastern outskirts of Starý Smokovec and consists of a complex of 14 wooden art pieces. The individual stations of the calvary were created by professional Slovak and Polish sculptors. These predominantly modern artworks form an artistic interpretation rather than a traditional Stations of the Cross.
Churches
The churches in the High Tatras are very interesting, with unique architecture and a special atmosphere in the beautiful Tatra environment. Examples include the Neo-Gothic Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary in Starý Smokovec, the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Štrbské Pleso, the Church of the Divine Savior in Dolný Smokovec, and the Parish Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Nový Smokovec.
