Zemplín region is usually divided into Upper and Lower Zemplín, with Upper Zemplín including the districts of Humenné, Medzilaborce, Snina, Stropkov, and Vranov nad Topľou, and Lower Zemplín including the districts of Michalovce, Sobrance, and Trebišov. emplín as a whole is rich in beautiful natural phenomena, historical castles and landmarks, bodies of water, and tourist sites that are popular both among domestic and foreign tourists.

The Zemplín region is dominated by the Vihorlatské vrchy – a mountain range of volcanic origin, on the territory of which is located the Vihorlat Protected Landscape Area and the Vihorlat Forest, which was included in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List in 2007 mainly due to the well-preserved beech forest with more than 240-year-old specimens. Bukovské vrchy is also a sought-after tourist location, part of which is occupied by the diverse Poloniny National Park.

A journey across Zemplín offers exceptional experiences in a region with many cultural and historical sites that are visually diverse and educational. Recommended places include Jasenovský Castle, Humenné Castle with the Vihorlatské Museum, or the Zemplín Museum. In the summer, water areas are particularly popular for leisure activities, and Zemplínska Šírava and Veľká Domaša are among the most famous and sought-after by visitors.

Poloniny National Park

Poloniny National Park is located in the Snina district of Zemplín. It is open year-round, attracting cross-country skiers in winter and hiking enthusiasts in summer. In addition to captivating mountain trails, there are also several sought-after wooden churches from the 18th century, such as the Church of St. Michael the Archangel.

Jasenovský Castle

Jasenovský Castle is a castle ruin located on a wooded ridge of the Humenné Hills, part of the mountains called Vihorlatské Vrchy. It was built in the early 14th century. The surviving elements of the medieval castle include the palace walls and the neck tower, with minimal remains of Renaissance vaults in the interior. Jasenovský Castle can be reached on foot from the town of Humenné.

Humenné Castle

Humenné Castle, originally built in the Renaissance style and later rebuilt in the Neo-Baroque style, is a national cultural monument. It is one of the largest and most extensive castle-type buildings in Slovakia. The permanent exhibitions of the Vihorlatské Museum include the art-historical section (gallery of rulers, Oriental room, sacred art, Golden Salon), natural science section (animal life of Upper Zemplín), exhibition of folk architecture and housing, exhibition of sacred art, and the gallery hall of Orest Dubay, a prominent figure in Slovak graphics.

Veľká Domaša

Veľká Domaša, also known as the “Slovak Sea” or the “Green Pearl of Eastern Slovakia,” is a reservoir built on the Ondava River in the mountainous landscape of the Ondavská vrchovina. Its beautiful surroundings and clean water attract tourists mainly for swimming, water sports, and fishing. There are equipped beaches, sports equipment rentals, playgrounds, accommodation facilities, and restaurants available.

Zemplínska šírava

It is the second-largest water reservoir in Slovakia in terms of surface area and the third-largest in terms of total water volume. It is a popular tourist destination with seven recreational resorts. This reservoir attracts tourists with its favorable conditions for swimming, water sports, fishing, cycling, and hiking in the vicinity of the Vihorlatské Vrchy Mountains.

Morské oko

Morské Oko is the largest lake in the mountains – Vihorlatské Vrchy and the third-largest natural lake in Slovakia after Štrbské Pleso and Veľké Hincovo Pleso in the High Tatras. It is one of the most beautiful spots in Slovakia, preserving its romantic and natural charm. Tourist trails lead to Morské Oko from Remetské and Zemplínske Hámre.

Zemplín Museum in Michalovce

The Zemplín Museum documents the living and non-living nature, the overall cultural-historical and economic development of the Zemplín region The museum is located in the building of the Sztáray family mansion in Michalovce, dating back to the 17th century. The permanent exhibitions of the museum include the natural science exhibition (ecological groups of birds and mammals of Zemplín), archaeological exhibition (presenting the prehistoric and early medieval development of the Zemplín region in chronological order), art-historical exhibition (works of fine art and crafts from the Romanesque period to the present), ethnographic and historical exhibition.

Museum and Cultural Center of Southern Zemplín in Trebišov

The museum is located in the premises of the late Baroque and later Classicist-style mansion in Trebišov. It houses exhibitions of steam plows, offering European and world unique exhibits and traditional techniques of contemporary folk art from the Slovak part of historical Zemplín.
