Prešov is a city full of history and architectural gems. One of them is Kriegerov dvor at Hlavná 77, which has been a national cultural monument since 1963. This historical complex, which connects Hlavná and Jarková streets, is a beautiful example of bourgeois architecture from Gothic to Classicism.
The history of Krieger’s Court dates back to the 15th century, when three separate brick houses stood on its site. In the 16th and 17th centuries, they underwent significant reconstruction – they were connected and a second floor was added. Since this reconstruction, we can find barrel vaults (a vault in the shape of a semi-cylinder) in several areas of the buildings. In the 19th century, the building received its current classicist facade with three arcaded arches of the loggia on the first floor.
Interestingly, the complex was once known as the headquarters of a pharmacy. Today, it houses commercial establishments, gastronomic facilities – including our sister businesses, the Viecha pod klenbami Wine Bar and Wine Shop and the first Italian pastry shop in Slovakia, Delizie – as well as various other services. This is also proof that Kriegerov dvor is a vibrant part of the center of Prešov even in the 21st century. 17th century.
Krieger’s Yard is named after a prominent Prešov family of German origin, whose members became famous in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, cartography and other scientific fields. One of the most famous of the Krieger family was the doctor Christian Ernest Krieger, the city doctor of Prešov. In the 18th century, he studied medicine at prestigious European universities and participated in the development of the city hospital.
Krieger’s Court is not only an architectural gem, but also a place that breathes history and stories of the noble family, scientists and doctors who shaped Prešov and its social life. But that will be the second part of our article about the history of Krieger’s Court.
