Michal Hudák
The beloved presenter and actor has his roots in Prešov. He was born in 1969 and is proud of his Ruthenian heritage. He even attended primary and secondary school in the Ukrainian language. It was clear from his childhood that he was drawn to the arts – he first worked in radio and amateur theater, then joined the Ukrainian National Theater in Prešov (now the Alexander Duchnovič Theater). Michal Hudák studied at the Kyiv Institute of Theater Arts and became a theater and film actor. He worked at the Alexander Duchnovič Theater in Prešov, the Flash radio station, and later established himself on television. He is also known as a member of the country and bluegrass band Žobráci, playing the mandolin.
Ivana Christová
A year after Michal Hudák, the most beautiful Miss Czechoslovakia, Ivana Christová, was born. She became the first modern beauty queen of Czechoslovakia in 1989 and subsequently captivated the world. With Bulgarian-Hungarian roots, she is considered exotic in our region. She appeared in several films, but she is best known for her Ivana Christová Children Foundation and the Orin Panacea NGO. She is also involved in cosmetic consulting.
Katka Koščová
Katka Koščová was born in Prešov in 1982 and gained fame through her victory in the first season of Superstar, a Slovak singing competition. However, she managed to establish herself as a successful and exceptional artist beyond the show. Her chanson-style performances are exceptional, and she prefers concerts in more intimate venues. She is not afraid to address serious social issues in her work.
Marián Leško
Slovak journalist, commentator, and publicist Marián Leško also comes from Prešov, where he was born in 1954. He served as an advisor to President Zuzana Čaputová on domestic policy for some time. He studied at the Faculty of Arts at P. J. Šafárik University in Prešov. He worked for the weekly magazine Nové slovo, newspapers Pravda and Práca, was a commentator for the SME daily, collaborated with Radio Free Europe, and regularly appeared on the program Sedem s.r.o. His strength lies in domestic political commentaries, and he is author of four books on political topics.
Igor Liba
Former Slovak ice hockey forward was also born in Prešov in 1960. He started actively playing sports at the age of ten and was a member of the ZPA Prešov club. Igor Liba won a silver medal at the 1984 Winter Olympics and a bronze medal at the 1992 Winter Olympics. He was a World Champion in 1985, silver medalist in 1982-83, and bronze medalist in 1987 and 1992. He played 211 games in the Czechoslovak national team, the most among all Slovak players, scoring 66 goals. He made significant contributions to winning the gold medal at the 1985 World Championships.
Peter Lipa
The renowned Slovak singer of Jewish-Hungarian origin was born in Prešov in 1943. He is one of the prominent figures in Slovak jazz and was for many years the only well-known jazz interpreter in Slovakia. His repertoire includes traditional, swing, modern jazz, Latin American jazz, jazz chanson, spirituals, funk, as well as rock and pop influences. After completing eleven years of secondary school in Prešov, Peter Lipa pursued further education in geodesy at a technical high school. Alongside his studies, he performed in an amateur theater in Prešov.
Marcel Merčiak
The popular contemporary presenter Marcel Merčiak was also born in Prešov, specifically in 1975. He completed both primary and secondary school on Mukachevska Street and attended a gymnasium on Taras Shevchenko Street.. Subsequently, he studied journalism at the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University in Bratislava. He commentates on sports broadcasts, mainly football, and occasionally ice hockey and biathlon.
Peter Nagy
This beloved singer was also born in Prešov in 1959. After graduating from the Ján Adam Rayman Gymnasium in Prešov, he studied at the Faculty of Arts of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University. He started as a folk singer. His first successful song that brought him to the attention of the public was “Profesor Indigo.”
Ivan Tásler
Composer, guitarist, and lead singer of the band IMT Smile, Ivan Tásler also has Prešov roots. He was born in 1979 and studied at the Ján Adam Rayman Gymnasium in Prešov. After finishing gymnasium, he even studied theology for two semesters at the Orthodox Faculty of Prešov University. The band IMT Smile has had well-known members such as Katka Knechtová, Oskar Rózsa, Marcel Buntaj, and Martin Valihora.
Martin Višňovský
Musician, bass guitarist, and singer, event organizer, founder of the club Stromoradie, is intimately connected to Prešov. He was born there in 1978. He is involved in the local music scene and is known for his humorous lyrics, often referencing the city of Prešov and its surroundings. He is characterized by his distinctive vocals. and creative approach to playing the bass guitar. He is also involved in band management and co-organizes concerts, music events, and festivals in Prešov.
