The oldest opal mines in the world are located in the middle of the mountains called “Slanské vrchy” in the village of Červenica in the Prešov District. They are also known as the “Dubník Mines” and are a historically significant area with roots dating back to pre-Roman times. Based on expert assessments of the findings, deep opal mining in the Slanské vrchy began around the 11th century.

Slovak opals have been renowned for centuries for their intense play of colors, known as opalescence, and their unique properties make them highly valued in global markets.
