The historic center of the city of Prešov is rich in cultural and historical landmarks that are worth experiencing. Buildings, such as Bosákova Bank, Caraffa Prison, the Evangelical College, the Greek Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist, Rákoczi Palace, the Town Hall, and Florian’s Gate are among the captivating historical sites, some of which date back century.
The Cathedral of St. Nicholas deserves a special mention as one of the oldest and most significant churches in Slovakia. The main altar, attributed to the Prešov carver Ján Weiss, is the dominant feature of the church. The visually striking Neptune Fountain from the 19th century and the Rococo-Classicist building of the so-calle County House are also noteworthy.
A visit to the Museum of Jewish Culture in Prešov is well-deserved. It was the first museum of its kind in Slovakia, and its permanent exhibition of Judaics is installed in the Prešov Orthodox Synagogue. Art flourishes in Prešov particularly in the spaces of the Regional Gallery and the Jonáš Záborský Theater, which offer visitors a wide range of contemporary art by local but internationally recognized artists.
